PICKING A GOAL: THE VOTTA EXERCISE

When picking your goal, you may have a lot of clarity—you know exactly what the goal is and the result you want. But maybe you are still figuring out what goal to choose. Perhaps you are at a crossroads in your career; you aren’t exactly sure what the next best step is, or what new service you want to create for your business.

When going through this exercise for the first time, you can’t pick an incorrect goal or issue. I do, how- ever, recommend picking something you are dealing with personally, as opposed to an organizational issue. It’s easiest to start with an issue that’s just for you. Also, pick a goal that can be written down, and someone else could witness. A key part of this exercise involves being able to separate your view (or that of someone else’s) from what can be distinguished as fact.

Whatever goal you choose, be specific and make sure it is measurable. For example, if the goal is to offer a new service, how are you going to measure that? Maybe it’s by launching a new website with the new service listed by a specific date. That is something someone else can witness, and can easily say that it did or did not happen.

Choosing a goal to tackle with The Votta Exercise is just the first step - consider reading my recent book "Controlling The Pause"!
